Biography

Roland Lucas
RolandRoland is the founding therapist and co-owner of Lucas Physical Therapy & Fitness of Sunnyvale, California; one of the leading physical therapy clinics in the Bay Area.

Born in Australia he received his Bachelors degree in Applied Science (Physiotherapy) from the University of Sydney, where he developed a special interest in the areas of sports and orthopedic physical therapy.

Roland received his Masters in Manipulative and Sports Physiotherapy in 2000 from the University of South Australia in Adelaide and his thesis was on repetitive strain injuries of the tendon [Overuse Tendinopathy].  While completing his Masters Roland was the team Physiotherapist for the University of Adelaide Rugby Team.

Since Physical Therapy school, Roland has undertaken an additional 2½ years of specialized education, giving him advanced evaluation skills and additional treatment options when compared to most therapists.  His extensive training includes the basic skills used in Physical Therapy, as well as specialized techniques and theories applicable to the fields of Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Neurology.

In 1992, Roland was recruited from Australia to work in the Physical Therapy Department of Morris Hospital, located in Illinois.  In 1995 he moved to California, and in 2001 he went into Private Practice in Sunnyvale, CA.

During 1996 Roland attended the Physical Therapy Residency Program in Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy offered by Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Hayward, California.  This Program now known as the Hayward Physical Therapy Fellowship in Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy is one of the leading Fellowship Programs in the US.  Graduates, like Roland, are eligible to become Full Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, which is the highest form of recognition an American Physical Therapist can achieve in the field of Orthopedic Manual Therapy.

In 1999 Roland attended the 6 month Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation [PNF] course at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Vallejo, CA.   PNF is system of hands-on stretching and exercise designed to improve muscular coordination and rehabilitate all types of movement disorders.

Roland is also a much sought after speaker, educator and writer.  For the past 10 years he has been offering Continuing Education to Physical Therapists; courses designed to provide licensed Physical Therapy professionals the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills.  He has also authored many educational courses on Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Manual Therapy.

Roland enjoys spending time with his family, working out in his Garage and Surfing, Windsurfing and Kitesurfing.
